Tomato black spot (Alternaria solani)

Tomato black spot, caused by the fungus Alternaria solani, is one of the most common tomato diseases. It can develop on all aerial parts of the plant, but the first symptoms most often appear on the lower leaves of older plants.

Symptoms of the disease

Recognizable symptoms include:

  • Round, gray-brown spots with clearly defined concentric circles (so-called meta-spots),
  • Chlorosis (yellowing) around the spots, which is caused by the breakdown of chlorophyll,
  • Black spots on the fruits, most often in places where the fruit comes into contact with the leaf or stem.

These changes not only affect the appearance of the fruit, but also its quality and market value.

Epidemiology of diseases

The pathogen Alternaria solani overwinters in the form of mycelia, conidia and chlamydospores in plant residues. When favorable conditions are created in the spring – high humidity and temperatures between 23-29°C, especially in greenhouses – the infection is activated.

Plants with nutrient deficiencies or nutritional imbalances are significantly more susceptible to disease development.
