Protecting peaches from leaf curl – a key treatment in the bud swelling phase

Timely application of copper fungicide in the early phenophase is crucial to prevent infection by the pathogen Taphrina deformans.

Swelling and bursting of buds in peach plantations is one of the most important phenophases for the implementation of protection measures. It is precisely in this period that optimal conditions are created for infection with the pathogen Taphrina deformans, the cause of peach leaf curl, a disease that often represents the biggest challenge in protecting these plantations during the growing season.

It is important to emphasize that this pathogen achieves only primary infection. This means that the infection occurs at the moment when the young leaves emerge from the buds. If preventive protection measures are properly implemented and the primary infection is prevented, the further development of the disease is practically stopped because there is no secondary cycle of infection.

Therefore, timely protection in this phenophase is of crucial importance.

The company Agrounik from its product portfolio recommends the application of the copper fungicide AIRONE.

Aeron is a two-component copper fungicide that contains two forms of copper – copper hydroxide and copper oxychloride. This combination allows:

  • rapid initial action by releasing copper ions from copper hydroxide
  • prolonged and stable action thanks to the gradual release of ions from copper oxychloride

The recommended amount of application in stone fruit plantations is 3 kg/ha.

In addition to suppressing the pathogen Taphrina deformans, this treatment also reduces the overwintering inoculum of numerous other causes of fungal and bacterial diseases of stone fruit species.
